What is the difference between infrared saunas and steam saunas?
First of all, lets discuss traditional steam saunas. So what’s wrong with getting one? Absolutely nothing! Traditionally they are fantastic for short sessions and feeling great. Relaxing and traditional in every aspect.
However… the unfortunate side is that a traditional steam sauna does not provide the many health benefits that a far infrared sauna does. In short, far infrared radiation… or otherwise known as, FIR, is a dry heat that has incredible health benefits that you would not receive from a traditional steam sauna.
Lets cover these health benefits and the differences that far infrared saunas provide over a traditional steam sauna:
For starters, the temperature that a traditional sauna would need to reach for our bodies to sweat is pretty high for safely exposing you for any extended period of time. Physicians will typically say that anything longer than 20 minutes at those high temperatures is not good for your body because it in fact puts a tremendous strain on the heart.
Would you expect an infrared sauna to be equally as dangerous with a high temperature requirement? Well if you said no, then you are correct! The exact opposite is actually true of far infrared radiation therapy.
The infrared heat waves can penetrate the body tissues much deeper (up to 1 3/4 inches compared to traditional steam saunas, which only penetrate approximately 1/8 of an inch). The difference is your body receives a deep detoxifying sweat that is sustained at about 120 degrees as compared to the 180 degrees that would be required from a traditional steam sauna.
For this reason alone, many doctors have began recommending far infrared saunas to their patients for many ailments. Among several of these conditions that far infrared saunas can help treat, some of the health benefits are still controversial and under study.
Some of the benefits that can be received from an infrared sauna include detoxification, weight loss, lowering of cholesterol, lowering of blood pressure, circulatory health, inflammation and the treatment of several ailments and diseases.
One amazing benefit of the detoxification process is received from the deep tissue penetrating heat that is able to pull out toxins and exfoliate them through the skin. Toxins like mercury, lead, car emissions, tobacco, mold and hundreds of other pollutants our bodies are bombarded with on a daily basis.
By detoxifying the body of these pollutants, you’re capable of stopping them from accumulating in your system, and in doing so, you can even prevent possible disease and premature aging of the skin, body, and mind. At the same time you are strengthening the immune system which helps keeps us running at top performance.
Ceramic vs. Carbon Based Infrared Saunas
So now you hopefully understand how superior far infrared radiation (FIR) is compared to traditional steam. And since you now know that an infrared sauna is much better then a traditional steam sauna, what type of infrared should you seek to purchase?
There are differences of the infrared spectrum and some infrared sauna models actually use different levels. Some use lower to medium spectrums, while others use the higher end of the far infrared spectrum. The differences that you’ll notice most of all is the time that is required to receive the benefit of sweating. You will want to make sure that the choice you make is capable of producing a good sweat, and if time is essential to you, we’d recommend the models that use the higher far infrared heat ranges.
While infrared saunas that use heaters which produce far infrared radiation waves that range anywhere from the low to high spectrum, you may consider which level of heat you need.
When exposed to infrared heat, you are essentially heated exactly the same as infrared heat waves as from the sun, just without the harmful UV rays and microwaves that also come from the sun which cause burning and skin cancers!
So why is the higher levels of IR better? Well you can make that decision for yourself. But the facts are, the only reason to choose a lower range or even a medium range of IR heat waves is because you enjoy sitting in your sauna for a longer time.
So what type of infrared sauna heaters should you choose?
There’s only two types of infrared heaters that are basically being sold in the consumer market today. Ceramic, and Carbon. So what type of heater should you be concerned about when choosing an infrared sauna?
Well let us explain the differences and let you decide.
Of the two types of infrared sauna heaters, carbon the best choice when it comes to your decision of what type of infrared sauna heater you should be looking for.
While ceramic heaters work fine, there is a huge difference in the technological changes of how sauna heaters have evolved.
Basically it is explained the easiest that a ceramic heater is older technology and can be compared to “riding a horse down a country road, while someone is offering to take you to your destination by vehicle.”
Here’s what that means exactly…
You see, ceramic rods produce infrared heat through small glass tubes that are placed strategically in the sauna. They can only produce so much heat, and they do that by running at very high temperatures. Obviously you can see what sort of problems this might create.
The first problem that should be noted is that these old school types of ceramic heaters can cause is what is referred to as “hot spots”. Certain areas in your sauna will have adequate infrared heat, while others have none. So in order to fully obtain the benefits of your infrared sauna that uses ceramic heaters, you want your entire body to be surrounded by the infrared heat so you can absorb as many rays as possible. Makes perfect sense right?
Second problem is since the heat is coming from such a small area to heat up the entire sauna, those rods get pretty hot! Even in spite of the fact that these high temperatures are part of the nature of a ceramic heater, it comes down to the fact that a ceramic heater is just not capable of fully surrounding a person with infrared heat adequately!
So what makes carbon heaters so much better?
Carbon heaters are much more effective because the heat that comes out from the carbon based heater is evenly dispersed so that you can lay right up against the panel without the sauna ever having a chance of giving you a burn.
Example: If you were to look at a 2 person infrared sauna of a standard size panel that uses ceramic rods, this would produce approximately 56 square inches of infrared heat. The same size panel using carbon based technology would produce approximately 572 square inches of infrared heat. This is what makes carbon heaters so much more effective! But that is also why carbon infrared heaters are also more expensive. It’s better technology!
So why would anyone still sell inferior technology?
Simple answer: Because those models are still effective and can even be very cheap and easy to sell. If the difference of your sauna heater is not that great of a concern to you, then this is a great way to save some money on a much cheaper model.
Carbon based technology has actually been around for several years now and most of the case studies that you will find are based on this technology with these types of sauna heaters.
Is A Far Infrared Sauna safe?
Of Course!
Far infrared technology is not anything new. It has been in existence for thousands of years! The only difference is it can be reproduced and brought into your home now.
The Sun actually has amazing benefits for your body’s health. The problem is that the sun’s rays can be very harmful to the human body as well with prolonged exposures. There are many nasty things such as UV rays, microwaves, and other radiation rays that come from the sun and penetrate through our ozone layer. Some scientist have argued that our ozone layers have been slowly depleted from man’s ignorant use of CFC’s.
Others can argue that there is no such thing as a “hole” in our ozone layer. The truth is regardless of there being any holes or not, the sun does in fact radiate these harmful rays that penetrate even the thickest of ozone layers. The debate is just how much of it are you actually receiving?
In spite of the Sun’s awesome health benefits, the unfortunate fact is we now view the Sun as something that needs to be avoided. So these days, we apply “Sun-blocking” lotions and oils that stop the harmful UV rays. This is unfortunate because many “Sun worshipers” still enjoy submerging themselves into the Sun’s beneficial and healing rays, but are still exposing themselves to UV.
Imagine if you could have access to all the Sun’s healing rays on a daily basis without any of the harmful exposure to the radiation, microwave, and UV rays. That is exactly what an infrared sauna does. It provides you with the healthy benefits of far infrared radiation without any of the harmful stuff the sun gives off too.
Doctors all over the world have recognizes the incredible benefits that far infrared saunas can offer their patients. This infrared technology can detoxify the body, increase energy, burn calories, lower blood pressure, increase cardiovascular health, relieve pain, decrease inflammation, alleviate fibromyalgia symptoms, and many other benefits including just overall good health!
Is Your Infrared Sauna Constructed Safely?
Obviously the health benefits are numerous. But it’s also important to make sure your infrared sauna is constructed right. One of the most important seals that you’ll need to see on your infrared sauna is called the ETL fire safety of approval. ETL stands for Electrical Testing Laboratories, and it is one of the hardest seals to get approval for. Basically it assures you that your sauna is 100% electrically sound from control panels to wiring.
According to ETL standards, all saunas sold in the U.S. must have this seal of approval.
