First of all, an infrared sauna is an elite class of it’s own. When you compare the benefits, cost, space requirements, and luxury of a traditional steam sauna vs. a far infrared sauna… you will see that the health benefits of a far infrared sauna is far greater when considering those of the standard saunas that use traditional steam heaters.
Far Infrared Sauna Health Benefits
The number one reason people choose infrared saunas over steam saunas is for detoxification and removal of harmful toxic materials from the body. The human body is capable of removing impurities through it’s natural methods of urine and sweat. Infrared saunas remove it by producing heat that activates this sweating system of our bodies. For your choice of getting the best infrared sauna possible, we highly recommend choosing a model from East Coast Saunas. Currently, there are only 2 sauna companies that manufacture and distribute infrared saunas that have been proven in clinical studies to produce the closest possible micron range of infrared heat waves that the body can absorb.

Space Advantages, Manageability, & Cost
When it comes to cost, manufacturers of several infrared saunas have made them very energy conscious and “green” for the planet. An infrared sauna unlike a traditional steam sauna does not use steam to produce the heat required for producing sweating. This means it’s cheaper to run then a conventional steam sauna based on the technology of infrared sauna heat, which produces instant heating and constant heat sources. The Infrared Sauna models of today occupy less space then steam sauna counterparts and require less installation time. Cheaper to install, cheaper to operate, and cheaper to buy! The health benefits are much greater in a far infrared sauna when compared to conventional steam saunas too.
Why Should You Buy A Far Infrared Sauna Instead Of Steam?
Steam heats the air around you and requires very high operating temperatures to produce sweating. When you sit in a far infrared sauna, you are receiving infrared heat waves that penetrate the skin and into your body’s tissues to produce sweat… not the air. With carbon infrared sauna heaters, this superior technology is inducing a sweat that takes much less time without the high heat from steam. This type of technology puts out the exact micron range for the human body to absorb properly. What that translates into, is a deep tissue penetration of the body that is producing a maximum detoxification benefit throughout your entire body.
So What Makes The “Best” Infrared Sauna?
Consumers today have been asking about Far Infrared Saunas and which company makes the best, and what infrared sauna models are the right choice. In order to answer all of these questions you must first consider the elements of an infrared sauna, and what is right for you. First off, the construction of your infrared sauna cabin and the materials used can vary. The most common woods used are hemlock and red cedar. Usually this choice comes down to aesthetics and personal style. What you want to pay attention to is other types of woods that can possibly pose certain problems for some people. You’ll also want to make a choice of what type of heater you want to have in your sauna.
Why does it matter?
This is a simple question to answer. For starters, you must consider the types of heaters used in infrared sauna models these days, and make choices based on budget and preference. Carbon heaters are proven to be better as a fact they warm a greater surface area, but they are also more expensive. These carbon heaters are primarily manufactured in China as the leader in infrared sauna heater technology. For the purpose of having the best infrared sauna, you will more then likely want to have a sauna that utilizes carbon heaters for the sake of maximum surface area exposure to infrared heat. Another thing you absolutely want to take into account is the effects of those heaters that is going to be used in your infrared sauna, and how it that can actually effect the material, namely the wood of the infrared sauna cabin, that your infrared sauna is made out of. Some of the glues that are used are not environmentally friendly, and while this may not even matter to you, it’s something to consider when it comes into question that infrared heat could possibly be releasing certain toxins from the glues that were used in your cabin. Most companies these days construct their infrared saunas out of water based glues and for obvious reasons you will probably want yours to also.
Can you see now why so many folks can get easily confused?
There are so many consumers these days who are interested in the health benefits of an infrared sauna, but do not really understand the technology or even know why they are superior to conventional steam saunas.
So allow us to answer the more common questions about infrared sauna technology and much much more!
What is far infrared?
Very simple… To explain it best, far infrared is one of the spectrums of light rays emitted and radiated by the Sun. In short, far infrared rays lies in between the light spectrum of the Sun’s electromagnetic spectrum where Visible light and the Microwave sectors are. Inside a far infrared sauna, the heating component is very similar. It is this very same type of far infrared heat waves that produce radiant energies from the Sun which far infrared saunas produce very similarly. This type of radiant energy from an infrared sauna is the very similar kind of heat that is generated from the sun, but without those harmful Ultraviolet, Radiation, & Microwave rays that are known to cause deadly skin cancers.
Far infrared saunas use a design for their heaters that takes from the technology developed by Dr. Tadashi Ishikawa, a member of the Research and Development Department of Fuji Medical, in 1965.
In laymen’s terms, an Infrared Sauna will heat you in the very same manner of sunbathing, that you would feel from the natural radiant heat waves which create warmth and energy from the sun.
This is known as the “healing light” which makes for natural infrared radiation that is reproduced by far infrared sauna heaters. These infrared sauna heaters gives you your very own “healing” radiant heat source, that is without the harmful UV rays. Similarly, when far infrared heat waves penetrates your body’s skin, it gives you the natural feeling of warmth. But unlike the common “Sun-worshiper” who sunbaths under the natural sunlight… this type of far infrared sauna heat is completely healthy and safe under most conditions, because it lacks UV rays.
If you’re wondering if UV rays are healthy or beneficial to you, the answer is a very resounding NO. You do not want UV rays, but in limited exposure to them, humans are usually fine. UV rays play a vital and important role on our environment that insects and vegetation need which we as humans obviously benefit from in other ways. But you would never wish to be exposed to UV rays from the Sun because of the damage and burns it causes to our skin.
The much debated topic to argue is whether or not we have created “holes” in the ozone layer and this is what causes the need for stronger sun-blocking lotions that create an absorption barrier between those UV rays and our skin. The scientific studies show conclusively that there are diminished layers of ozone levels around our planet, but we will avoid the arguments that humans have caused this or not. It hasn’t been proven yet and it’s a debate that is best left for the scientists, right?! Fact is, some selected models of far infrared saunas are completely “green” for the environment and cost very little in operating costs. This is good for those of you who might be concerned about your “Carbon Footprint” and any “Green” concerns you may have.
HOW SAFE IS A FAR INFRARED SAUNA?
Far infrared radiation (FIR) is considered completely safe, and totally harmless for all living things. In fact, infrared heat is even used to heat newborns and premature babies in hospital incubators. Of course as the precautions listed above, there are certain illnesses and conditions that should be discussed with your doctor first before using an infrared sauna.
Some people with certain illnesses and conditions should not use an infrared sauna or should use it with great caution. You can be exposed to far infrared heat radiation without ever burning the skin. If you were to expose yourself for long periods of time to the Sun’s rays, you obviously know that you will sustain a “sun burn” from the sun’s damaging UV rays. It’s those harmful rays that is what causes deadly skin cancers and sunburns. But the radiant heat from infrared waves itself is completely safe. Again, it is so safe that infrared heat like we mentioned is used in hospitals to keep infants and newborns warm. The benefits of daily infrared sauna use in your daily routine is considered remarkable, and is even beginning to grab the attention of doctors world wide. The health benefits of daily use of radiant heat to create and cause sweating, has been proven to have amazing beneficial results! In fact, it is the infrared sauna that is considered far more beneficial then the old typical heat of a conventional steam sauna, which uses those traditional stones or heated rocks to produce the steam, and heats the air AROUND you.
Naturally a steam sauna can be quite relaxing and make you feel recharged, focused and great. There is an extreme difference however in how far infrared sauna heaters do the same thing. A far infrared sauna heater uses radiant infrared heat to penetrate your body’s tissues… it doesn’t heat the air like conventional steam saunas do. This difference is pretty big too. When you use far infrared radiation waves to heat your body instead of heating the air around your body, your sauna is capable of penetrating your body tissues to a depth of over one and one half inches. This means that you’re benefiting from deep detoxification and numerous health benefits that a conventional steam sauna cannot even come close to. There is simply no comparison when it comes to the two. It’s quite literally a whole other ballpark in the form of detoxification, weight loss, and amazing health benefits. If steam saunas were thought of as an engine of mechanisms to compare to… think of steam saunas as a car, and far infrared saunas as the space shuttle. Quite the difference! With that said… pay attention to the following:
These are the following precautions that you should be aware of:
- Prescription Drugs: Naturally, you would want to check with your physician or pharmacist for any possible interactions with a drugs affect due the use of an infrared sauna. Some medications have side effects with sunlight, infrared heat, or other such types of interactions regarding the exposure to such elements.
- Diseases: Again, always check with your physician regarding the condition of raising the core temperature when prolonged exposure to an infrared sauna, as it may contradictory for individuals with adrenal suppression, multiple sclerosis, or systemic lupus erythematosus.
- Injuries: Anytime an acute joint, muscle, tendon, bone, or ligament injury is sustained; it should not be heated within the first 48 hours so as to reduce the swelling or until the joint erythema and swelling subsides. Heat is usually applied after this time period to promote healing, but should be avoided at the sudden onset of these types of injuries. Saunas can aggravate or worsen such an injury.
- Pregnancy: At any stage of pregnancy; it is recommended to discontinue use of infrared saunas immediately.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND PREGNANCY
Any woman that is pregnant, or any women who thinks she could be pregnant, should avoid the use of any type of sauna. Just as the same with taking hot baths, the same is recommended to be avoided with saunas because the radiant heat can cause severe damage and even fatal consequences with certain elevated body temperatures. As always, you should consult with a physician before using any type of sauna whatsoever if you believe you might be pregnant.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND CHILDREN
Children are much more sensitive to temperature changes then adults can be. A child’s core body temperature rises much faster then an adults because of their limited circulatory adaption and higher metabolic rates per body mass. A child’s increased cardiac demand can make for the inability to regulate their core temperature properly by sweating if their body is heated to rapidly. Always consult with your Pediatrician first and take careful consideration from your pediatricians evaluation before allowing any child to use any type of sauna.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND MEDICATIONS
Anyone using a prescription drug should seek the advice of their doctor or pharmacist for any possible interactions or changes in the drugs side effects from elevated temperatures in the body. There are known side effects with certain medications such as barbiturates, diuretics, and beta-blockers that can impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanisms. Even certain over the counter medications and drugs, such as antihistamines, have been known to cause the body to be more prone to heat stroke; and extra precaution should be taken. Be sure to consult with your physician about the recommended use of a far infrared sauna with any medication you might be taking. This is just good common sense once again.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONS
Individuals with cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension or hypo tension, congestive heart failure, impaired coronary circulation, or those who are taking prescribed medications, which might affect blood pressure, should use caution when exposed to prolonged heat. The stress that prolonged heat exposure puts on the body will increases cardiac output, blood flow, and temperature regulation that naturally makes the body take on an effort to transfer internal core temperature to the external environment via the sweat glands (perspiration) and respiratory system. This is the totally normal function of our body as it naturally cools itself that can cause major changes in the heart rate. The changes in heart rate that are normal for most people can be dangerous to those with heart conditions. As example, the potential of increasing the natural resting heart rate to rise by 30 beats per minute for every degree that the core temperature has increased might not be a safe increase for someone that has any type of heart condition, and therefore, radiant infrared heat therapy should be avoided.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND CHRONIC CONDITIONS
There are certain conditions that are known to have adverse effects on the body’s natural mechanism to cool itself. These are the following conditions, which are known medical diseases, that have an associated impairment of the natural perspiration functions of the body:
- Parkinson’s
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Central Nervous System Tumors
- Diabetes with Neuropathy
- Hemophiliacs
Individuals predisposed to bleeding or those with fever should avoid the use of Infrared Saunas. Any individual with a sensitivity to heat should also avoid the use of FIR (Far Infrared Radiation).
INFRARED SAUNAS AND ACUTE JOINT INJURIES
If you have sustained any type of recent or acute joint injury, then you should naturally avoid heat for the first 48 hours following the injury. Any joint or joints that have chronic swelling and heat may not respond positively to heating of any kind, and vigorous heating of such a joint with this type of condition can be an indication of an infection which could be skeletal or other enclosed tissues which would become hot and swollen with infections. Seek the medical attention of your physician immediately.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND MENSTRUAL CYCLES
The heating of the lower back area of a woman during her menstrual cycle may cause a temporary increase of their menstrual flow. Some women will tolerate this process to gain relief from the commonly associated pain and discomfort with their menstrual period, whereas some women will choose to avoid the use of a sauna during their cycle. It is known to have some benefit of relieving the pain for some women, but the conditions of heavier flow cycles can be caused by the heat of an infrared sauna and should be made aware of this fact.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND SENIOR CITIZENS
The natural ability to maintain core body temperature correctly can also decrease with age. Therefore, it is due to circulatory conditions and the additional decreased sweat gland functions of the elderly that must be considered. The body must be able to activate its natural cooling processes in order to maintain core body temperature properly. And sometimes the elderly have a decreased ability to maintain this core temperature, which would make rapid and prolonged heating exposure a danger. As always it would be wise to have a full physical check up and discuss this with your physician.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND ALCOHOL
Despite common beliefs that it is best to ‘Sweat Out’ a hangover, it is not advised that infrared sauna use be considered as a “hangover treatment.” Alcohol intoxication lowers your judgment and reaction capabilities; therefore a person’s rational judgment will not realize when the body has a negative or harmful reaction to high heat. Additionally, the increased heart rate, which can lead to heat stress and even heat stroke, are common effects that alcohol has on your body.
INFRARED SAUNAS AND MEDICAL IMPLANTS
Silicone augmentations to note DO absorb far infrared radiation, and it should be noted that any type of implanted silicone prosthetic or augmentation such as for the breast, nose, ears, and other such areas could be warmed by infrared radiation waves. Due to the fact that silicone will melt at over 200°C (392°F), it shouldn’t be adversely affected by the usage of infrared sauna heating elements. It is still advised that you check with your surgeon and possibly a representative from the implant manufacturer to be certain that it is completely safe. Other types of medical implants generally will reflect FIR (Far Infrared Radiation) waves, and are not heated by this type of system. These include metal pins, artificial joints, metal rods, surgical plates, spinal implants, and other such medical implants typically are not effected, but cautions should be exercised when considering the use of a far infrared sauna, and you should always consult with your physician about the safe practice of infrared heat with any medical implant. The use of any Infrared Sauna should be discontinued immediately if you start to experience any pain or discomfort near any such implant.
PACEMAKERS / DEFIBRILLATORS
The magnets that make up the assembly and which are used to assemble most types of luxury models of infrared saunas, can interrupt the ability of pacemakers and defibrillators or inhibit the output of one. Like usual, you will wish to discuss with your surgeon, the manufacturer, and your physician about the possible risks this may cause for you, and if your doctor suggests the use of an infrared sauna be avoided or not based on your type of pacemaker and or condition. Note – In the rare event that you should experience any sort of pain and or discomfort for any reason, you should immediately discontinue the use fo your infrared sauna and consult with your physician.

WHATS THE VERDICT ABOUT INFRARED SAUNA SAFETY?
Does The Health Benefits Of Infrared Sauna Therapy Outweigh The Risks?
You’ve seen em… Nearly every health club has one… but with high temperatures outside and today’s society being all green conscious on us; should you consider putting yourself inside an infrared sauna?
Why Use Far Infrared Saunas vs. Steam Saunas
After a rigorous workout or exercise, you can relieve your sore muscles and even promote faster recovery with an infrared sauna session. Saunas are often used to alleviate many symptoms and conditions such as arthritis, asthma, chronic fatigue, and for detoxification by flushing harmful toxins from your body through the body’s sweat glands and own cooling mechanism when exposed to heat. This process can “boil-off” the chemicals and impurities that often get trapped and stored in our bodies fat cells. There was one very important Austrian study that had found far infrared sauna use may even promote your bodies own boost to the immune system and may help to reduce the frequency of colds and fighting off viruses that cause the flu. Typically, those who have heart conditions or certain illnesses are warned against the use of saunas due to the heart’s response to the body being heated rapidly. Heart rates can jump up to 30 beats per minute typically per every degree of your bodies core temperature raised. There are some studies that have shown men suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure), that have used far infrared sauna therapy twice a week have actually enjoyed a decrease in their blood pressure! A simple 20 to 30 minute session is more then enough to work up a good sweat. The key to healthy and safe sauna use is to stay hydrated! Always hydrate BEFORE and AFTER an infrared sauna session. You need to replenish and rehydrate with one to two glasses of water prior to using your infrared sauna as a recommendation, and immediately after as well.
What Risks Are There Using Far Infrared Saunas?
The sauna is no place for a party. Never consider drinking alcohol before or even while inside your infrared sauna. For intoxicated people, the judgment factor diminishes with the use of booze and the risk of dehydration is greatly increased. Intoxication combined with rapid heating of the body is a definite risk that you are putting yourself in. A study has also indicated that hopeful fathers to be can be adversely effected as well by heat. According to urologists; “…saunas don’t seem to effect sperm counts, but there is some small evidence, at least for a period of time after exposure to a sauna, that sperm mobility and quality can be affected.”
The Verdict!
No need to be concerned about far infrared sauna therapy. Just use common sense! If you’re not misusing your sauna and following sound advice, there is literally no health risk according to the American Heart Association. Consequently… if you suffer from extreme high blood pressure or heart issues, you will wish to consult your physician first as common sense.
